Adele Helfrich
I am a fibre artist based in Cape Town, driven by the belief that beauty can be salvaged and reinvented from what we cast away. My work primarily celebrates the Western Cape landscape by transforming discarded fabric and textile waste into art, heavily stitched with a freehand machine embroidery technique.
Lately, however, I am intentionally moving toward a slower approach, incorporating slow stitching to my work. This slower evolution has also expanded my work into three-dimensional fibre sculptures, found- and collected objects allows me to represent the rich biodiversity of our local ecosystems. My hope is that others will look closely and see my work and understand each piece stands as proof that we can create art from the very things society throws away.
